The island

One island.
One party.
No neighbours.

Isola Serena lies twelve nautical miles off the Epirus coast, in water that stays clear to twenty metres. Six pavilions are set along its southern rim, each facing open sea; the north shore is left to the cicadas and the goats.

Nothing here is shared with anyone. The island is taken whole, by one party, with its staff of fourteen in residence. When you arrive, the last boat leaves.

The six pavilions

Stone, cedar
and open sea

Each pavilion stands alone on its own terrace, out of sight of the others. Together they sleep twelve, with rooms for four children besides.

“The luxury is not the house. It is that no one, for seven days, will ask anything of you.”Guest book, September

A Michelin-trained chef writes the menu each morning from the island's garden, the fisherman's boat at first light and whatever the party feels like. There is no menu to choose from; there is a conversation.

A day on the island

The day is yours.
This is one of them.

06:30

Sunrise swim

The Cove is in shadow until seven. The water is nineteen degrees and perfectly still.

08:00

Breakfast under the fig

Figs from the tree, yoghurt from the mainland, the morning's bread. Newspapers only if you ask.

10:30

The Serena to Antipaxos

Forty minutes south. The sea caves at Ortholithos, and an anchorage no one else has found by noon.

13:30

Lunch aboard

Grilled fish from the morning's catch, tomatoes from the garden, a white from Cephalonia. A long swim after.

16:00

Physician's hour, or none

A consultation in the Wellness Pavilion for those on the programme. For the rest, a shuttered room and the sound of cicadas.

18:30

Tennis, or the sea again

The court is in the cypress grove and cool by six. The children take the dinghies out with the crew.

20:00

Aperitivo on the point

Chairs carried out to the Lighthouse. The sun goes behind Paxos at 20:24 in August.

22:00

Stargazing dinner

The north lawn, no lights but candles. The chef comes out to say what is on the table. Nothing after this is planned.
